If you have been to music festivals over the last 10 years or more, you can see how girls in particular are very serious about the ‘Festival Aesthetic’.
Outfits have morphed from long skirts and bohemian tops to bikini tops and short shorts, to bras and thongs, to sheer tops, pasties to cover nipples on otherwise bare breasts to topless and completely nude girls.
‘PUBLIC NUDITY’
Public nudity is not really new. Nudism or Naturism has been practiced for years, and is especially popular in places like Cap d’Agde in France and other places in Europe.
While naturists focus on being naked while going about their daily activities, in the 1960’s, the counter culture or hippie movement embraced nudity as well as sexual freedom, and festivals emerged that encouraged (or at least tolerated) public nudity, and sometimes sex.
‘BODY PAINTING’
Some nudist festivals are held to celebrate particular days of the year, and activities may include nude bodypainting.
One example is the Neptune Day Festival held in Koktebel, Crimea to depict mythological events.
‘NATURE FESTIVALS’
Other festivals are more focused on nature.
‘SKYCLAD’
‘Skyclad’ or ‘Neopaganism’ refers to ritual nudity in Wicca and Modern Paganism. Some groups perform most or all of their rituals naked, and often celebrate rites of fertility with sexual intercourse and celebrations of life creating sperm and female fertility.
‘WOODSTOCK 1969’
Public nudity started to gain popularity in the 1960’s and early 1970’s as naturism magazines from Denmark and Germany published photos and stories.
Music festivals like Woodstock in 1969 started the trend of combining the ecstasy of ‘new’ music with the freedom of being naked. Both were frowned upon by the establishment, so they were appealing to the counter-culture movement, that loved the reactions to their behavior, but really just wanted to be free and unencumbered by the strict rules of society.
‘THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION’
As the internet came into being, and both social media and digital cameras started to become more popular, music festivals in particular became more of a competition for girls especially to dress and decorate themselves to attract both attention at the festival, but now, also in Social Media.
You really can’t underestimate the power of the Social Media explosion in the transition from sexy shorts and tops to thongs and pasties, to topless and full nudity at festivals.
Girls wanted their Social Media feed to attract followers and comments, so their ‘fashion’ and nudity reflected that.
‘BURNING MAN’
By far the festival with the most overall nudity is probably Burning Man, a week-long large-scale desert event focused on “community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance” held annually in the Black Rock Desert about 100 miles (160 km) north-northeast of Reno, Nevada.
Burning Man began in the 1980’s as a bonfire ritual on Baker Beach in San Francisco among friends on the summer solstice, and has morphed into a huge annual festival that attracts close to 80,000 people.
At Burning Man, there are no headliners or scheduled performers. Instead, the participants design and build all the art, activities, and events. Artwork includes experimental and interactive sculptures, buildings, performances, and art cars, among other media.
NPR said of Burning Man in 2019, “Once considered an underground gathering for bohemians and free spirits of all stripes, Burning Man has since evolved into a destination for social media influencers, celebrities and the Silicon Valley elite.”
‘COACHELLA’
The Coachella Festival is younger, starting in 1999, and held in Indio, California. It is much more mainstream as opposed to counter-culture. It attracts a lot of celebrities with attendance of over 200,000 people. It’s considered more cliquey and the costumes and fashion tend to reflect that.
Nudity is not common at Coachella, but skimpy and sheer outfits are everywhere.
‘EDM FESTIVALS’
EDM or Electronic Dance Music, is popular and girls at EDM festivals (Ravers) often spend a lot of time and money to ‘glam’ up their outfits. Face painting, pasties over their nipples and bedazzling bras are popular.
Nudity at EDM festivals is usually limited to topless girls or flashing, but does occasionally include full nudity.
‘GATHERING OF THE JUGGALOS’
If you have never heard of the ‘Insane Clown Posse’ then you are definitely NOT a ‘Juggalo’.
I could probably devote an entire issue to the Insane Clown Posse and Juggalo’s, but space is limited, so search them if you need to know more.
The Posse also known as ICP are a Hip Hop duo from Detroit, Michigan that perform a style of hardcore hip hop known as horrorcore and are known for their elaborate live performances.
The songs of Insane Clown Posse center thematically on the mythology of the Dark Carnival, a metaphoric limbo in which the lives of the dead are judged by one of several entities. The Dark Carnival is elaborated through a series of stories called Joker’s Cards, each of which offers a specific lesson designed to change the “evil ways” of listeners before “the end consumes us all”.
At the annual music festival called ‘Gathering of the Juggalos’ almost anything goes.
‘MARDI GRAS’
I would be remiss if I did not include New Orleans famous ‘Mardi Gras’ festival.
The holiday of Mardi Gras is celebrated in southern Louisiana, including the city of New Orleans. Celebrations are concentrated for about two weeks before and through Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday (the start of lent in the Western Christian tradition).
Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”, reflecting the practice of the last night of consuming rich, fatty foods in preparation for the Christian fasting season of Lent, during which the consumption of such foods is avoided.
In the French Quarter, particularly on Bourbon Street, young girls flash their breasts in exchange for colorful bead necklaces.

This month, we look back at January 1985, and one of many German Magazines of the time. This one was called ‘Teenage Sex’ which pretty much told you what you would find inside.
Issue #38 included a pictorial called ‘Orgasmic Ride’ featuring teens Betty and June enjoying a ‘ride’ with a couple of bikers. These magazines were very explicit hardcore, and did not hold back.
